“Because I am an importer of antiques and use them as a foundation in my design projects, I use many contemporary artist to take the edge off the antiques. By using contemporary art, it gives the home a more updated feel with the “history of antiques” as the timeless factor that envelopes the surrounding. I always encourage a client to buy what they love so that the art is really a choice made by them, and it is not a part of a cookie formula for design. I love to work with Luc Leestemaker from the Netherlands. I use Swedish furniture as a mix in design and he is the perfect compliment because he evokes the feel of a beautiful Swedish sky , sometimes overcast, sometimes sunny.
Regarding artists, I use Steven Seinberg quite frequently because he uses my favorite French, Italian blues and deep browns that are such a compliment to antiques and can carry a room with minimal furniture. Adele Sypesteyn is such a compliment to neutrals and her geometric forms are fresh, whether they were done 10 years ago or current works. And Michael Marlow [has] such a rich feel and beautifully compliments olive and wood tones. [I like] David Bordgerding for sleek sculpture for interior or exterior.
Art is the ice in the design cocktail.”
